FOCAL POINTS: WOMEN ADVANCING THE APERTURE
THE DELAWARE CONTEMPORARY
February 7 - April 24, 2020

Focal Points: Women Advancing the Aperture, will be on view at The Delaware Contemporary opening February 7, 2020 and continuing through April 24, 2020. The exhibition of primarily black and white photography aims to present images representing a diverse spectrum of subject matter that pushes the boundaries of photo-imaging and technique. By manipulating light, focal points, shutter speed, filters, apertures, and subject material, the photographs will reveal and articulate the persistence of the female voice through the visual language of the camera lens creating visible shifts in illusion and perception between abstraction and representation.

Focal Points: Women Advancing the Aperture, coincides with a series of programs, events and exhibitions to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.  The series is grounded in an event by artist Shawn Baron Pinckney, who has designed an interactive fashion experience, Art & Couture: A Contemporary Centennial, to showcase the powerful role art and fashion plays in celebrating the strength, conviction, and advancement of gender equality made over the last century, and to recognize the individuals and organizations that carry the torch today. Approximately seven local, contemporary women of significant influence will be modeling Pinckney’s fashions. Using fashion, history, and literature as the armature of inspiration, Pinckney elicits contemporary discourse about societal norms inviting viewers to broaden their perspective.

Art & Couture: A Contemporary Centennial is scheduled for April 25, 2020 with a fashion runway that meanders through the galleries and concludes with an art auction. For more information visit: https://www.decontemporary.org/

Cultural institutions everywhere are celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment, examining the historic movement that empowered some American women with the vote. In Wilmington, the Delaware Contemporary—true to its mission—has mounted Focal Points: Women Advancing the Aperture, an elegant, eclectic exhibition that puts a literal and figurative modern lens on empowerment.

"Amie Potsic has two untitled works—topical, socio-political images of mannequins (from her 2000 Seduce Me series)—whose visual juxtapositions and contemporary sensibility come not from the expected digital process. They are historic-process silver gelatin prints on aluminum."
